I started out in oils and was good at it but paintings took to long to finish. Just an impatient gal, then I took up acrylics and did not like them. Then went to water colour and loved it but wanted to paint in a different format, kind of realism kind of abstract. This book helped out a lot as far as what I wanted my paintings to look like. But not for the beginner.I also took up coloured pencil, Derwents, Prismacolor and Faber Castell and LOOOOVED them. They also make water colur pencils that you can use with paint or just the pencil. They are fantastic. I like the Derwents the best, especially since they also have a Ink water based pencil.So, still honing in on my style, but this certainly did help me.I am not looking to "copy" someone else's style, but create my own and I already paint and draw, so this book did the trick. I also loved a few other books like these that I have reviewed which you can look at._____________________________Also, if you want to know about Color theory to get even better....COLOR WORKS, the crafter Guide to Color by Deb MenzFOR ANYONE who wants to knwo about Color Theory this test breaks it down so that ANYONE can understand this subject. This delightful book uses the wet-in-wet watercolor technique to create soft, delicate and still powerful watercolors, from landscapes to portraits. It looks deceptively easy, while it requires good color skills blended with a trained eye to see what is developing in the color.There are two approaches--the "see what emerges" and the harder "just enough control to start" approach. I love both of them, because of the whole idea of letting go of control in artThe photographs are big and well done, the text helpful. While there are step-by-step lessons, you have to be willing to have loose and swimmy beginnings. Jean Haines also is careful to show how to gain more control, which is an advanced step.A book well worth owning and working through. Even if you eventually don't stick with the technique, it is an interesting exploration of the wonders of transparent watercolors.
Haines certainly stays on target throughout this book-- that target being the encouragement of beginning watercolorists to be bold in their use of pigment and water. She encourages experimentation in the medium and provides enough of her own examples to convince one of her sincerity. Those who favor a tighter, more drawing-based approach, may not revel in her enthusiasm as readily as this reviewer has.
I really do love Jean Haines' Atmospheric Watercolors. She has a technique like no other artist I've seen (and I have a LOT of books). She shares her information freely and actually has made me feel like I can do some of those things. She works on 300 lb rough paper and I haven't treated myself to any of that yet. . .but I will soon! If I could save just one book in a fire or flood this would be it!
Beautiful book by Jean Haines, some very informative material about watercolor techniques. Jean goes into detail about how one holds the brush affects how loosely ones paints, where we hold the brush, the pressure we use, where we place the brush tip on the paper and where we take off the paper. Jean also discusses how her experience with Chinese painting made her more aware of how very important brush strokes are. She has exercises throughout the book which is very good for those of us who are new to painting who need to practice. She also covers negative painting which is a technique that creates so much depth in a painting. This book besides being beautiful is another one I will refer to always.
Great watercolor book for beginners and those who have been struggling with their watercolor painting. This artist presents a most intriguing way to learn to loosen your strokes and enjoy watercolors for that they are and not fret about trying to correct. Wish I had found this when I first started taking watercolor classes. I might have enjoyed even more much earlier!
I purchased all Jean Haines books and 2 DVDs (not available on Amazon) after reading one of her books, falling in love with her style, and by watching her you tube videos. She has a very loose style that anyone can learn to do to either expand your artistic skills or if you're just starting out. Highly recommend any of her books. Her trailers for DVDS are on you tube and also her book reviews. Good place to check if in doubt.
I love the way this artist paints. My painting has improved in a short while by watching her DVDs and following her books. I do wish there was a little more explanation of all her steps from beginning to completion. But overall it is one of the better books I have purchased on the subject.
